Why should skin lesion treatment be performed in a clinical setting? DIY removal methods can be particularly risky. Cutting, burning, freezing or tying off a lesion at home can result in infection, unnecessary pain, bleeding and scarring, and most importantly, can delay proper diagnosis if the lesion wasn’t actually harmless. There are several important reasons why skin lesion treatment should be carried out in a proper clinical setting, particularly when using diathermy, cautery or similar techniques. Why a clinical setting matters * Correct identification of the lesion – Not every lump, bump, mole or skin tag is harmless. A trained practitioner can assess whether the lesion is suitable for treatment or whether it should be referred to a GP or dermatologist. * Infection control – Clinical treatment involves appropriate sterilisation, strict hygiene procedures and single-use equipment where appropriate. * Controlled treatment – Diathermy and cautery involve heat/energy application to tissue. The practitioner needs to control the intensity, duration and depth of treatment to minimise unnecessary tissue damage. * Managing complications – Even a small lesion can bleed more than expected. A clinical practitioner should know how to manage bleeding and recognise when something isn’t healing normally. * Appropriate aftercare – Proper wound-care advice is important following lesion removal/treatment, including keeping the area clean, protecting it and knowing what signs of infection or abnormal healing to look for. 🚨 REMEMBER - ALWAYS CHECK THAT YOUR PRACTITIONER IS QUALIFIED, VERIFIED, INSURED & LICENSED

🚨 PLEASE DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME! 🚨 We’ve all heard the old advice to tie off a skin tag with cotton or thread to make it “drop off” — but this photo shows exactly why I would strongly advise against it. ❌ Tying off a skin tag can cause significant pain, swelling and trauma to the surrounding tissue. ❌ It can create an open wound, which increases the risk of infection. ❌ If the skin tag is larger or has a substantial blood supply, the result can be particularly unpleasant. ❌ And, importantly, not every lump or growth is actually a skin tag — attempting to remove an unknown lesion yourself can delay proper assessment. This poor client followed advice to tie off this skin tag and has been left with a very painful, swollen area and an obvious wound. 😢 Please don’t use thread, dental floss, elastic bands or other DIY methods to remove skin tags. If you have a skin tag that is bothering you, get it properly assessed and have it removed using an appropriate, safe method. Don’t risk infection and unnecessary pain for the sake of a DIY removal.
